See you soon, at the UN Inter-Agency Games 2023

Having been looked after very well by UN City Copenhagen, the flag embarks on its journey to Vienna, where it will inspire the next iteration of the Games in 2023.

Thank you for the hospitality Copenhagen, it’s been an incredible adventure!

    • There is indeed hope. We hope to have a final decision on location in the next two weeks and will likely host in mid October. We had some setbacks but we have not given up.

  1. I hope you would be able to announce it ahead of time to enable us apply for the visa considering the lengthy (most of the time 2-3 months needed) procedures taken in granting Schengen visas. Wishing you all success in finding the best location.

    • Hey Olivier, not great news but this is what we received 13 February 🙁 They mention Autumn, but can’t see that happening as changing the whole yearly schedule for the games is not a good thing. I hope this helps.

      Dear Cora-Lee,

Thanks for reaching out, we fully understand your concern. We have been heavily engaged with a number of potential hosting sites but regretfully we did not manage to reach an agreement. It is important for us that the Games provide a good sense of community but also provide good value for money. As our requirements did not meet some hosts expectations, we could not reach an agreement. Others cancelled negotiations due to political and security reasons.

The situation we find ourselves in is quite unprecedented, but we fast come to understand that economics have changed significantly in the past years. Both hospitality industries and municipal project managers have become more risk averse than ever, which is our main challenge in negotiation.

Myself, Imed, and Dani are working hard on securing a deal in an interesting location. You know how dedicated we and how passionate we are about the Games, so please trust we are doing our best. Given timeline though, we are considering an early autumn date as we do want to give everyone enough time for planning and securing travel documents.

Thank you for your understanding, we hope to have more frequent updates soon.

      All the best from Vienna

    • Dear Qais,
We are still finalizing the arrangements for the 2023 IAG. Unfortunately we have no location to announce yet. We will post all available information on the website, as soon as available.
      Thanks and all the best

      • Thanks so much, Steven, and thank you Qais for asking! The games will still be in Vienna, yes? If I want to participate in tennis and am at UNHQ, do I need to bring other competitors for that event, or will a team of one do? 😀

        • Hi Ileana, it is possible to go on your own and you will be matched up with another UN location: I have done this in the past. But maybe we could try to get a UNHQ team going? I have contacts!

        • Thanks, Ileana, for the location confirmation, hope we could know the date in earliest for proper management, especially for those how have some restrictions in travelling due to conflicts and national passport requirement.

      • Dear Steven,
Is there at least confirmation on dates? This would help planning even before other details are known.
        Thanks a lot!

  4. Steve, I would like to know, approximately, the date of the 2023 games in Austria. I am from New York. My family is planning a cruise in the spring. It would be helpful to have an idea about the dates of the games, in order to avoid a conflict.

  6. Is there a possibility to get short distance disciplines for athletics? Not everyone can run the 10-12 km. Please consider 100m, 200m and 400m. The relay can’t be the only track discipline.
    Thank you 🙏🏽

  8. Hi, I have a question that am I eligible to apply to the next IAG in Vienna as a previous UNDP employee (2009 – 2016) and one of the IAG participants in NY IAG 2014? If the answer is yes, please provide or direct me to a link information about the fees, accommodation, and other expenses. I live in the US, CA right now.

    • Dear Seyoum,
When participating in the Games you can only commit to one sport. To find all the rules and requirements, you are already on the right website. Have a look around and let us know if you have any questions.
      best regards

  13. A very big thank you to UN City for an amazing 5 days on behalf of FAO attendees. Everything was spot on and the darts venue couldn’t have been better. I would say one of the best in 20 years.
One disappointment, the Trophy? Going green is important but this thing is just rubbish in quality and you can’t even read what is written, besides the fact it doesn’t stand. Unfortunately a waste of money.
One suggestion for Vienna next year, smaller town where all UN staff can meet up and watch other sports.
